The war against Japan was waged not merely at sea, but in the skies of the Pacific. The U.S. Navy's carrier-based planes bombed and strafed enemy ships and shore bases, and supported amphibious landings. They served as the vanguard of the advance, a fact recognized early on by commanders: the loss of a single carrier could change the complexion of the war.
Featured on this DVD are four rare films made by and for the U.S. Navy during WWII. They include "Life and Death of the USS Hornet" profiling the carrier which struck Japan in 1942 and fought at Midway, but which was sunk a short time later at Santa Cruz. Also featured is "The Fighting Lady", a stunning color film about the Essex-class USS Yorktown, "Brought to Action" showing the victory at Leyte, and a short film about the assault on Japan's fortress island Truk in 1944.
Color and B&W films. Run time: 120 minutes.
